Das Ende von Kodachrome K40 - verlängert!

Kodak hatte ja schon vor einiger Zeit angekündigt, das letzte Entwicklungs-Labor für das legendäre Filmmaterial Kodachrome K40 im Sommer diesen Jahres zu schließen. Danach ist die Entwicklung nur noch über eine Hand voll privater Speziallabors (u.a. in Hong Kong und Kansas) möglich. K40 war als relativ feinkörniger Farbumkehrfilm jahrzentelang die Standart-Filmsort für Super8 und Schmalfilm im Allgemeinen. In einer wohl letzten Mitteilung hat Kodak nun nochmals eine Gnadenfrist von zwei Monaten draufgelegt:

"Kodachrome Super 8 film must be received by Kodak's lab in Renens, Switzerland by September 25, 2006 in order for that film to obtain Kodak- certified processing. No Kodak-certified processing for Super 8 film will be available after that date. This extends the previously announced final processing date by approximately two months, in order to give customers adequate time to process their Super 8 images through Kodak's certified facility."

Jeder, der noch unentwickeltes Super8- oder 16mm-K40-Material herumliegen hat, sollte sich wohl trotz der verlängerten Frist etwas beeilen...

Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 supports Canon XL-H1

Great news for all users of the Canon XL H1 camera: Adobe has just released a free, downloadable patch for Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 that includes project presets for the special 24F, 25F and 30F progressive frame modes of the XL H1. It was possible to use this kind of footage in Premiere Pro 2.0 before, but you had to tweak the XML preset files in the program folder by hand to avoid field problems.

Poor Man's Cinemascope

Ever tried to use a DV camera's 16:9 mode together with an Anamorphic Lens Converter? Wow, that's real widescreen! (Can't amaze you? Sooorry, I know...for some of you that's mabye the oldest trick in the world. But still pretty cool, I think). Would really like to see this in HDV resolution. This would be...uhhhmm...2553 x 1080 Pixels? Definitely damn wide.

So here's a PAL DV image (shot with a Sony PD-150 and the Century Optics Anamorphic Converter):

Test: Fisheye for Sony HDV from Raynox

If you're looking for a cheap fisheye or extreme wide angle converter for your Sony FX1 or Z1 HDV camera, the Raynox HDR-FXR 180 might be an interesting option. It is priced somewhere around 450 EUR (also available at the usual rental houses for about 18 EUR per day) and Raynox claims that the lens has been specificaly developed for the FX-1 camcorder. And yes: It is zoomable!


I just had the opportunity to do a quick test of this converter lens. The following image of a checkerboard was done using a Sony FX-1 in HDV mode and the Raynox HDR-FXR 180 attached to its front. FX-1 front lens in full wide angle position. Click the thumbnail for PAL-res image.




At the corners, you can see a slight blurriness (and the usual chromatic aberration produced by the FX-1).

Günstiges Colorimeter von Pantone

Die für die gleichnamigen Farbpaletten bekannte Firma Pantone hat mit dem Produkt "huey" ganz frisch eine simple und mit einem empfohlenen Verkaufspreis von rund 100 Euro zudem äußerst preiswerte Lösung zur Farbkalibrierung von Computer-Monitoren vorgestellt. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Bundle aus einem kleinen Hardware-Stick, der im Grunde ein Colorimeter (Belichtungsmesser) ist, sowie einem Software-Wizard, der nach der Messung weitestgehend automatisch die richtigen Farprofile erstellt. So soll sich auch von Anfängern innerhalb weniger Minuten und ohne weitere Vorkenntnisse eine komplette Monitor-Farbkalibrierung bewerkstelligen lassen, verspricht Pantone.

Interessant ist zudem, dass der Stick bei seinen Farbtemperatur-Messungen auch die sich verändernde Umgebungsbeleuchtung berücksichtigen können soll.

Das Gerät läuft unter USB, soll an LCD- als auch klassischen CRT-Monitoren einsatzfähig sein und ist mit Windows 2000/XP und MacOS X kompatibel.

Paint.NET 2.6 mit Curves, Blending Modes & 64 Bit

Das von Studenten der Washington State University entwickelte Malprogramm Paint.NET ist nun in der Version 2.6 erschienen. Das kostenlose Freeware-Programm benötigt das .NET Framework und wurde urpsprünglich als Ersatz für das äußerst magere, in Windows integrierte "Paint" geschaffen. Mit den Features der neuen Version macht das ambitionierte Projekt nun einen weiteren Schritt nach vorne in Richtung "kleine, aber gut benutzbare Bildbearbeitung für den normalen PC-Anwender".

So werden nun Layer mit automatischem Alphakanal, Blending Modes und Gradationskurven unterstützt (letzteres kann übrigens nicht mal die Elements-Version von Photoshop). Neu ist außerdem eine 64 Bit-Implementierung sowie ein verbessertes User-Interface, mit dem man nun auch komfortabel mit Bildern in hohen dpi-Auflösungen arbeiten können soll.

Natürlich kann sich Paint.NET noch nicht im Ansatz mit "großen" Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen wie Gimp, Paint Shop Pro oder gar Photoshop messen - doch wenn dieses kleine, feine Programm auf möglichst vielen Windows-Desktops das graußige Paint ersetzen würde, wäre das definitiv begrüßenswert ;-)
